Chat for Google Apps

Someday I'm going to build a simpleish webapp (i don't know, maybe embed it in a spreadsheet gadget?) to provide chat functionality. Here's a bunch of blubberish:

So of course, the webapp. I doubt I'll be using Google Apps Script due to its limited dynamiciticity or whatever in the standalone version where it can do stuff using my account. But then I need to find some other way to access the spreadsheet without giving anyone but admin access in order to keep people from modifying the chat logs. (...)
